The 15 June YAAP meeting will feature a program on Evaluating Image Quality. The program will be discussion-based, with background and structure provided by the two presenters, Wallace Kaufman and Mark Svendsen. It will explore, briefly, reasons we might want to evaluate and score images, how scores can be derived, and what they might represent.

The heart of the session will be a discussion of “noise” in scoring. Presenters will define and describe score-scatter and steps that can help reduce it. Finally, the discussion will consider whether image quality has a grounding in cognitive science. That is, to what extent are human brains hard-wired to react positively or negatively to certain features of an image, hence helping to drive perceptions of image quality.

The topic is obviously extensive, and this discussion is intended to provide a high-altitude view of the various dimensions involved in scoring images. It could lead to more in-depth or narrowly-focused future discussions.
